Leisure Extravaganza: Singapore’s Gardens By the Bay

They have been open for only three months and already welcomed over one million visitors, among them the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: Singapore’s Garden by the Bay are a huge success. The dramatic leisure destination was designed by UK landscape architects Grant Associates, and has been shortlisted for two Awards presented at the World Architecture Festival, which will be celebrated in Singapore from October 3 to 5.

At 101 hectares, Gardens by the Bay will eventually be one of the largest gardens of its kind in the world comprising Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. Grant Associates was responsible for master planning the first and largest of the three planned gardens, Bay South, which stretches over 54 hectares and  opened in June 2012. Bay East and Bay Central are yet to be completed.

A remarkable blend of nature, technology, environmental management and imagination, highlights of Bay South include 18 Supertrees (25-50 metre vertical gardens that light up at night) and two giant Cooled Conservatories, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, housing Mediterranean and Tropical climate plants. The project also includes a rich variety of Horticultural Gardens, designed around the themes ‘Plants and People’ and ‘Plants and Planet’.

The Jury has decided: Winners of the garden unique Design Contest

First Prize Jury Winner: Outdoor Kitchen CANORTA by retogni from Switzerland

Second Prize Jury Winner: Foldable Furniture LINEA by Marco Gottardi from Italy

Third Prize Jury Winner: Bottle Stand cum Chiller by MMDesign from Germany

The expert jury of the garden unique design contest has decided on their three winning designs! They are proof of how widely the associations range when it comes to “Dining Outdoors”.

The awards were given to the promising designers on Monday, September 3, during the “unique hour” at garden unique.

Winner of the Third Prize is Manfred Makedonski from Germany, who took to solving a very real-life problem: whether casually in the park, at the beach or at a lakeside, your beverage is at peril of tipping and gets warm annoyingly fast. Makedonski’s proposal is as simple as it is helpful: a minimalistic rod combined with a felt sleeve to slip your bottle into – all you need to keep your drinks save and chilled.

The Second Prize was awarded to the furniture collection LINEA by Marco Gottardy from Italy. The slim silhouettes together with the elegant lines that make up the surfaces of the pieces and their pleasing colours make for the real summer feel. Plus they are easy to fold and store away, which is always good for those small spaces and the change of seasons.

The First Prize went to the outdoor kitchen CANORTA by retogni from Switzerland. It is a kitchen fully equipped with sink, gas stove and a fitting seating arrangement designed to take cooking out of the kitchen right into the middle of things at your next garden party. It is made up of several modules, which are fast to assemble and make the whole kitchen easy to transport to where the party’s happening.

The awards were given to the promising designers on Monday, September 3, during the “unique hour” at garden unique.

Congratulations to the three winning designers!
